4 Step Apology

November 18, 2020

Today’s a long one but may be worthy of your time and attention. How to Offer a Full Apology: (anon)
4 steps: 1. Own what you did. “Hey, I completely lost my temper with you yesterday.” 2. Show you understand how it affected the other person. “It wasn’t fair of me. I know it made you feel disrespected and upset.” 3. Apologize. “I’m really sorry I blew up at you..” 4. Make amends. “It won’t happen again. To make sure of that, here’s exactly how I’m going to make it up to you.”
The one word that is not in these 4 steps?  “But.” If you use this word, the apology flies out the window. “I’m sorry I lost my temper, BUT I hadn’t had a single break all day long.” No.
A full and respectful apology doesn’t include one excuse. The person who apologizes like this treats people the way they want to be treated—respectfully. #PassionPurposeProductivity
