MONDAY PHRASES “Meet a Deadline”
Today, deadline simply means a due date for reports, projects, taxes, proposals. But one commonly cited origin goes back to the American Civil War, when some prison camps had an actual line drawn around the camp. Prisoners who crossed that line could be shot by guards without warning. That line was literally a dead line.
